Nestled along the East China Sea coast, Xiangshan in Ningbo boasts exceptional geographical advantages, rich natural landscapes and profound cultural heritage, with vast rolling waters, scattered islands and undulating mountains as its stunning backdrop. Nearby, the "Rice Bucket Mountain" area has grown into a popular outdoor lifestyle destination for young people. The Renovation of Xiangshan Sluice Gate, designed by MARS Studio, is located on the south side of Daoren Mountain in Tuci Town. The sluice divides the inner and outer areas of the Wai Tu seawall, offering unobstructed panoramic views of rugged reefs and the magnificent ocean beyond.

Long an overlooked, silent functional infrastructure, the sluice is reimagined through a design inspired by the local mountain and sea scenery. Its rolling new facade echoes distant mountains, integrating seamlessly with the natural landscape. The translucent metal mesh skin balances the building’s structural integrity, wind resistance and harmonious dialogue with nature. More than a water regulation and traffic connection facility, the renovated sluice becomes a "mountain-sea boundary", a public landmark bridging nature and culture, inviting visitors to reflect on the deep bond between humans and the environment.
